Top Ten Celebrity Stoners

Celebrites are just like everyone else, and that means a lot of them smoke weed. Here's a list of our top ten celebrity stoners and their quotes about their herb of choice, marijuana.

Woody Harrelson: Environmentalist and activist for legalization, Harrelson is also a member on NORML's advisory board.

"I do smoke, but I don't go through all this trouble just because I want to make my drug of choice legal. It's about personal freedom. We should have the right in this country to do what we want, if we don't hurt anybody. Seventy-two million people in this country have smoked pot. Eighteen to 20 million in the last year. These people should not be treated as criminals."

Seth Rogen: Once arrested for marijuana in Los Angeles, NORML member Seth Rogen also shared what appeared to be a real joint with James Franco during MTV's movie awards.

“When I first came to L.A. I got caught smoking weed on a beach in Malibu and had to go to court. It was the craziest thing ever. I was thinking, “We’re in Los Angeles. There are probably 400 people getting murdered at this second, and these cops are taking an hour to write up my court summons for smoking a joint on the beach.” That just seemed so fucking ridiculous to me.”

Richard Branson: Founder of the Virgin empire, which includes everything from airlines and record stores to cell phones, Richard Branson is arguably to most successful stoner in the world.

"I don't think smoking the occasional spliff is all that wrong...I think it’s wrong that 100,000 young people have criminal records every year for doing something which is no worse than...drinking alcohol."

Matthew McConaugheyFamous for his bong and bongos incident which got him arrested by Austin police in October 1999.

"No computer, no gadget, no trickery. I am an animal, it is a plant. I will beat the weed!"

Justin Timberlake: Claims he uses marijuana to relax and shut his mind off.

"The only thing pot does for me is it gets me to stop thinking. Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high."

Sarah Silverman:  Star of The Sarah Silverman show, Silverman is known for hitting a joint before hitting the stage.

"I'd have to be honest: I have contempt for pretty much every drug other than pot. I find drunk people gross. Most people with more than one drink in them aren't giggly, goofy and happy the way people are with a puff of pot smoke in them... At a party, I have so much fun stoned, flitting about - but once I sniff that first wave of drunkenness on someone, I'm out of there."

Dawn Wells: Everyones favorite girl next door, “Mary Ann” from Gilligan's Island was arrested by Idaho police in October of 2007, at 69 years old, for possession of marijuana.

"I think it is so hysterical that people went nuts over it. I am what, now, 102 years old? I get booked for the first time in my life and suddenly I am a drug-using bum?

Susan Sarandon: Former friend of Timothy Leary and outspoken medical marijuana activist, Sarandon publicly supported proposition 19 to legalize and tax marijuana in California.

"We’ve legalized marijuana recently. Medical marijuana, but the rest will come."

Jack Nicholson: After years of being quiet on the subject, Jack, now 73 years old, says he still smokes pot.

"I don't tend to say this publicly, but we can see it's a curative thing.

Willy Nelson: How could we forget the long time legalization activist who claims to have smoked weed in the white house while Jimmy Carter was president.

"I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower. God put it here. If He put it here and He wants it to grow, what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?"

Who's your favorite celebrity stoner????

How to Cover the Smell of Marijuana

Hey dudes, Tater here. So, you've got yourself into a bind and your room smells like grass. How do you make it smell less like pot. First of all, if you're reading this, you're a fucking rookie, take it from an expert like Tater, get your shit together, then use one of the following to cover the smell of marijuana:
  1. Febreeze – I know you don't wash your clothes, so you definitely have this.
  2. Incense – Available any where you buy pipes
  3. Cologne – Find the bottle you got from Grandma last Christmas
  4. Open a window – If you live in your mom's basement like I do this might be difficult
  5. Light a match – Seen it in the movies
  6. Lysol – look in the bathroom, sure to cover up the smell of weed
I've personally used all these methods, and they all pass the mom and girlfriend tests...rarely.

Household Solutions for Cleaning a Glass Pipe

What household substances and chemicals can I use to clean my glass pipe?

Your glass pipe, your baby, she's dirty. Time for what we call a bong douche. Look around the house, I'm sure you'll be able to find some stuff to clean your pipe. Here are some tips:
  1. Rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol – great for cleaning your pipes, check your bathroom medicine cabinet
  2. Grain alcohol, Everclear, moonshine or remnants of that super shitty vodka you never want to drink again – not the best solution, but cheap and available, liquor cabinet, go look.
  3. Mineral spirits, denatured alcohol – if you have this, you know what it is, use it to clean your bong.
  4. Hot water – you're a poor bastard. Get a job.
These are just a few of the things you can find around your house to clean your glass pipe, just make sure to rinse your pipe out thoroughly so you don't end up inhaling any noxious chemicals.

If you know of any others, let us know. Also, to keep bongs and pipes hitting smoothly in between cleanings, use a Kashtray, your roommate's toothbrush, or your girlfriend's eyelash brush.

What Makes a Good Head Shop

What makes a good head shop?

Hey guys, Tater here. I've read some reviews of head shops recently. There was a California Head Shop that someone was criticizing for being dark and smoky. Are you fucking kidding me? I thought all head shops were dark and smoky.

Here are some things to look for
1) Do the bongs and pipes have dust on them?
2) Are the head shop workers awake?
3) Music – reggae, Phish, Grateful Dead, all signs of a legit head shop
4) Allowed to use the "b" word?
5) Do they sell the Kashtray?
6) Is there a in-store pet? (points for iguanas, beagles, and any species indigenous to South America)

If you've asked these questions and know the right answers, congratulations, you're an expert on head shops. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think makes a good head shop.

Deaths per Year Due to Alcohol vs. Marijuana

According to FDA reports, there were an average of 33 deaths per year that could be attributed to marijuana use, between January 1997 and June 2005. In all of these cases marijuana was listed as a secondary factor in the death. Not one case stated marijuana as a primary factor. (1.)
Excessive alcohol use, on the other hand, was a factor in approximately 79,000 deaths per year, between 2001 and 2005. Excessive alcohol use was the 3rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death for people in the United States for this time period. (2.)

Overdose: Alcohol vs. Marijuana

While only 10 times the “normal” amount of alcohol consumption can lead to death, it would theoretically take 1000 times the “normal” amount of marijuana consumption to cause death. According to the CDC, there has never been any report of a marijuana induced death. (3.) Alcohol poisoning is the primary cause of 317 deaths per year on average, and a contributing factor to death in another 1,076 deaths every year, for a total of 1,393 deaths every year caused by alcohol poisoning. (4)

Accidents: Alcohol vs. Marijuana

Marijuana differs from alcohol in that alcohol use often increases risk-taking behavior, while marijuana use does not. Every year alcohol use is a major factor in deliberate self-harm, domestic accidents and violence. (5)

Cancer and the Effects of Alcohol vs. Marijuana

Alcohol is associated with an increased risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx and larynx, colon, liver, stomach, breast, and ovaries. A 2011 study found that one in 10 of all cancers in men and one in 33 in women were caused by past or current alcohol intake.(6)(7)
While many researchers agree that marijuana contains known carcinogens, or chemicals that can cause cancer. Results of epidemiologic studies of marijuana and cancer risk have been inconsistent, and most recent epidemiologic studies have not found a substantial effect on cancer risk.(8) A recent study, funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse, which involved 1200 people who had lung, neck or head cancer and an additional 1,040 people without cancer matched by age, sex and neighborhood, found that even the very heavy marijuana smokers showed no increased incidence of the three cancers studied.(9)

Short Term Effects of Alcohol vs. Marijuana

Smoking marijuana regularly (a joint a day) can damage the cells in the bronchial passages which protect the body against inhaled microorganisms and decrease the ability of the immune cells in the lungs to fight off fungi, bacteria, and tumor cells. Marijuana use also impairs perception, judgment, thinking, memory, and learning. (10)
Alcohol use also affects the immune system as a whole, and also impairs perception, judgment thinking and learning. In addition, while the average joint has 0 calories, the average beer has about 150 calories, which can contribute to weight gain, not to mention hangovers.

The Long Term Effects of Alcohol vs. Marijuana

There are some physical health risks, particularly the possibility of damage to the airways in people who smoke marijuana or any other substance for that matter. However, the latest and most comprehensive research on marijuana has concluded that it does not contribute to the development of lung cancer. (11) While some people believe that marijuana can cause mental illness, studies have shown that marijuana may enhance the effect of such illnesses, it certainly does not cause them. (12)
Alcohol is a primary or secondary factor in a wide range of health problems. Excessive use of alcohol can cause mental heath problems such as brain shrinkage, dementia, physical dependence, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and alcohol withdrawal syndrome.  Damage to the physical body may include chronic gastritis, anemia, hypertriglyceridemia, cardiomyopathy, hypertension, stroke, fatty liver, cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis, liver cancer, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, alcoholic lung disease, kidney stones, increased risk of gouty arthritis.  Alcohol can also cause skin diseases such as urticaria, porphyria cutanea tarda, flushing, cutaneous stigmata of cirrhosis, psoriasis, pruritus, seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea. (12.5)

The Effects of Alcohol and Marijuana on Sex

Alcohol tends to have a negative effect on male sexual performance, since alcohol intoxication can decrease sexual arousal, decrease pleasureability and intensity of orgasm, and increase difficulty in attaining an erection, also known as whiskey dick. However, men that suffer from premature ejaculation may actually benefit from the decreased stimulation.
The effects of marijuana on libido are inconclusive, but marijuana does not appear to have negative effects on sexual performance. Studies have shown that marijuana boosts libidos, increases sensitivity to touch, and enhances erotic pleasure in roughly 50% of people who smoke. (13)

The Social Effects of Alcohol vs. Marijuana

It is widely known that alcohol use contributes to aggressive behavior and acts of violence, but studies have shown that marijuana use actually reduces the likelihood of violent behavior. (14) According to a Harvard School of Public Heath study, 72 percent of college rapes occurred when the female was too intoxicated by alcohol to resist/consent. (15) Another study shows that in about 67% of child-beating cases, 41% of forcible rape cases, 80% of wife-battering, 72% of stabbings, and 83% of homicides, either the attacker or the victim or both had been drinking. (16) In the US, about 3 million violent crimes occur each year in which victims perceive the offender to have been drinking at the time of the offense. On the contrary, because marijuana is still illegal in lost places, the most common crime smoking marijuana leads to is…smoking marijuana.

How to Clean Your Pipe with Rubbing Alcohol

A glass or metal pipe is one of few things in this world that can be literally as good as new after a thorough cleaning. Using rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol is a great way to clean your pipe; it's cheap, easy, and effective. This method also works great for cleaning bongs, bong stems, vaporizer handkits and other smoking accessories, however, alcohol should not be used for softer materials, like wood or bone. There are several variations of this method, but all basically involve soaking your pipe in isopropyl alcohol and then using something to remove the resin.

My favorite way to clean my pipe using alcohol is putting my pipe in a ziplock bag, pouring some alcohol into the bag, and then waiting an hour or two before shaking the bag and/or using a variety of tools to get to those hard to reach places. I only use isopropyl alcohol with 91% or higher concentration on my pipes, and a bottle of it usually costs about a dollar. I really don't think you need to spend a lot of money on expensive pipe cleaning solutions, as alcohol works just fine. You could also use Everclear grain alcohol if you have any left over from your Jungle Juice party.

After an hour or two (or even overnight), I take the bag and give it a few shakes to loosen up the resin. You could also put some kosher salt or uncooked rice in the bag to act as a mild abrasive.

Pour out the resin-infused alcohol, being careful not to get it on anything of value, as it will cause stains. If the pipe is still a little dirty, I like to use some wire pipe cleaners at this time, since the resin is still soft and easy to remove.

Once your pipe is completely clean, give it a good rinse in warm water, wipe it down with a paper towel, let it dry and enjoy.

Check out our article on cleaning your pipe with boiling water.

Top Ten Reasons to Clean Your Pipe

Your pipe is clogged and it's that time again; time to clean your pipe. Of course a clogged pipe is reason enough to clean it, but there are other reasons to keep your pipe clean as well. Here's our top ten.

10. Chimney Fire!: In cases of excess build-up, resin can actually catch on fire, which can burn the finger you use to cover the carb (hole).
9. New Again: A glass pipe is one of few things in this world that can be literally as good as new again after cleaning.
8. Taste: Resin tastes bad. Weed, on the other hand, tastes good. You wouldn't drink from a dirty glass, would you?
7. Ash Mouth: No one likes to get a mouthful of ash when they hit a pipe.
6. Germs: The average desk top has over 1200 germs per square inch. How many does your pipe have? You could end up with a zit, a cold, herpes or even worse.
5. Ash Eye: If you blow into your pipe to clear it, you could get ash in your eye. Not comfortable or attractive, unless you wanna be a pirate.
4. Health: Resin is probably not very good for you. Carcinogens are bad for your lungs and resin has more carcinogens in it than the weed your smoking.
3. Looks: While the resin on the inside of a glass pipe does bring out the colors in it, variety is the spice of life. Clean your pipe often. Watch your pipe as it matures and see the changes it goes through. It's like having a kid, so I've heard.
2. Performance: A clean pipe just works better.
1. Happiness: Because a clean pipe is a happy pipe.

To keep your pipe ash-free between cleanings, use the Kashtray. The Kashtray's built-in metal cleaning pin removes all the ash and other unwanted smoking material from your pipe, bong, or vaporizer, keeping it working smoothly.
